Mark Shea's site is again stirring things up with Bob Sungenis.
A few weeks ago Bob showed up on Mark's site with an encomium on the importance of geocentrism to orthodox Catholicism. Now Bob is ripping up the USCCB committee's "Reflections" document that explores the idea that maybe, just maybe, Catholics should be focusing what evangelism exists at people other Jews who, after all, worship the same God we do.
Bob didn't stop at criticizing the idea on its merits, but threw in just about every anti-Semitic slur ever flung. On Mark's comments, he had several defenders.
On the off chance you see this, Bob, please take a look at Matthew 15:24-28, where Jesus mentions that the children of Israel are God's children and we gentiles merely the dogs who get the scraps. I'd be reluctant to contradict Him on that and be grateful just to be a furry mutt in His house.
Seems to me that on geocentrism and on hostility to our elder brethren of the covenant, Bob feels his judgment is superior to that of the magisterium. There's a term for that -- Protestant. Wear it proudly, Bob, and please quit defaming the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church by trying to impose your opinions as Her truths.
Each of the last two Sunday gospels have pointed to the importance of subjecting our judgments and our opinions to the revealed truth. In Matthew 16:13ff, Jesus asks "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" The disciples give the various opinions, then Peter speaks the truth of which Jesus says, "flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven".
This past Sunday (Matthew 16:21-23), Jesus reveals to the disciples the necessity of His suffering and death, but the same Peter who had just received a blessed revelation from God spouted his own opinion, "God forbid it!". Jesus rebuked him for placing his own judgment above the revealed truth.
Repetition is often used to make a point to those who refuse to listen. May God grant us all the grace to subject our own judgments and opinions to the Truth He reveals in His holy Church.
