Stopped in a little deli recently that was festooned with all manner of flotsam and jetsam of bygone political campaigns from FDR’s day up through ‘96. They were nicely bipartisan. The most intriguing items:.
1. A photo of an RFK rally with a prominent handwritten sign “Seek a Newer World”. OK I know the Kennedys were big promoters of going into space, but I never heard that settling humans somewhere other than earth was a big part of either of their platforms.
2. A Carter-Mondale poster captioned “Challenging Leadership for Challenging Times”. They didn’t really think that slogan through too well, eh?
3. A caricature of Nixon with an attributed 1968 quote along the lines of “Those who have had four years to seek peace and failed to do so should not be given a second chance.” Ouch.
There were several buttons from the unsuccessful 1984 (I think) Nancy Dick campaign for the U.S. Senate. Her son, Timber Dick (yes, that’s his real name!), was a failed candidate for Denver city council this spring. He probably wouldn’t have been a very good city councilman, but he would have made for some pretty funny headlines.
