. . . so get with it!

News from Bill Cork, including an e-mail he received from Bob Sungenis. In my opinion (experienced in working with the law and even in investigation and trial preparation for a high-profile libel case in the early 1990s, but still not an attorney), one item in the Sungeins e-mail could rise to the level of libel.

Bob Sungenis says that “About Mr. Cork: He is a liberal Catholic who denies some of the most basic doctrines of the Catholic faith.”

"Liberal Catholic" probably doesn't mean the same thing to any two people, so it's a well-nigh meaningless epithet. On the other hand, to say that Bill Cork “denies some of the most basic doctrines of the Catholic faith” is (1) false (as far as I can tell); (2) meant to denigrate the readers’ opinion of Mr. Cork; and, if we’re counting Mr. Cork as a public figure, (3) it was in all likelihood made by Mr. Sungenis with either knowledge that the statement was false or reckless disregard as to the truth or falsity of the statement. That makes it libel. All Mr. Cork would have to do is prove some damage to his reputation. (That could be the hardest part given the beating that Mr. Sungenis’ credibility has taken in recent weeks.)

If Bob Sungenis has some solid evidence that Bill Cork denies ANY basic doctrine of the Catholic faith, I’d be very interested in seeing it, as I’m sure Mr. Cork would be too. If nothing else, maybe we can find out what Bob Sungenis thinks are basic doctrines!

It’s especially sad to see Bob Sungenis sink to stating that Mr. Cork disagrees with him because Mr. Cork has some Jewish ancestors.

Bob, on the off chance you read this and don’t take it as a personal attack, please take a moment to consider the possibility that the people who are criticizing you are not doing so to ruin you personally or because they’re wrong, but because they care about the Body of Christ and fear that some of the things you’re currently doing are not in the best interest of that sacred Body.
