All of ye are likely familiar with both The Catholic Nerd Blog and the recent geek test (44.97041%, major geek, thank you very much). Well now, in addition to being both a nerd and a geek, I’m also apparently a fogey. Saturday night the missus and I went to the Denver concert of The Irish Tenors. Most members of the crowd, and a large and crowded room it was, were a good deal closer to 60 than to 40. The fellows put on a good show, though through most of it we were quite concerned for their leader, Dr. Ronan Tynan, who said he was suffering a bit of altitude sickness. He missed a few songs and in the second half of the show had a stool to sit on. Most of the material was traditional Irish music. Some was original material and a few covers of other performers’ songs. They had an orchestra of around 40.
Lowlight: “My Heart Will Go On”. (But it did get rousing audience reaction.)
Highlights: “Red is the Rose “, “Go, Lassie, Go” (a/k/a “Wild Mountain Thyme” and the musical inspiration for my nemesis’ paraphrase of the Magnificat) and “God Bless America”, for which all stood and the audience joined.
