The latest CAI post points out where Bob Sungenis is heading. His associate Albert Cipriani writes a revealing piece entitled, “A Case for Catholicism”.
In the second paragraph he mentions “the mud hole our apostates [sic] bishops have driven us into. “ He doesn’t how the bishops are apostate, though. Seems like that would be a rather significant point, doesn’t it? That’s particularly true since he’s attempting a case for Catholicism apart from the Church’s duly established hierarchy.
A few paragraphs further down he says, “The one worthy reason to believe in Catholicism today is the self-same reason there's always been to believe in Catholicism, and that is that it's the most rational religion in the world.” I’d differ. There are at least two better reasons:
#1 It’s TRUE, and
#2 It’s the only religion that offers humans hope of a better life both now and for ever.
Our reason is much too limited to understand much of anything about He who has made us, even when He’s told it to us Himself. God’ mercy – the heart of Christianity – certainly isn’t a rational act. So how can Catholicism be suddenly the paradigm of rationality?
He goes on to say that any theist who believes in a communicative God must believe in Catholicism. (A relatively big jump in reasoning, but not worth addressing right now.) Then the kicker: “Of course the 5 billion non-Catholic inhabitants of this earth would disagree. And probably 999 million of the 1 billion ostensible Catholics would disagree to boot. The truth is always outnumbered.” So, per Bob and Albert, there aren’t many more than one million actual Catholics in the world today. What, pray tell, separates the 999 million “ostensible” Catholics from the chosen few?
In summary, there are unspecified charges that the bishops (either some or all, no specificity here) are apostate, an insistence on maintaining pure reason and the accusation that nearly all “ostensible” Catholics aren’t worthy of the name. Bob, remember that Jesus said He would be with us always and that the gates of hell would not prevail against His Church. The words of Jesus must take precedence over your opinion (or mine) of how things ought to be. Please take this chance to re-assess your growing rift with the institutional Church. Just as God is merciful, so are His followers. There will be great rejoicing at your return to the fold.
